Council Steps up in a Big Way for the Construction of the Rail Trail
Recently, Nanaimo City Council voted in favour of matching funds on all money raised up to $100,000. On top of that, they are trying to unlock an additional $200,000 of matching funds by using some of our already parks-rich city's park acquisition budget. The motion also called for:
·That Council supports the development of the E&N Trail south from Downtown to Seventh Street by 2019.
·That Council add from General Revenue $50,000 in 2014 to undertake preliminary design – routing work and provide cost estimates.
·That Council direct staff to pursue senior government grant opportunities in cooperation with the Nanaimo Region Rail Trail Partnership.
·That Council consider, based on outcomes of the previous motions, utilizing General Revenue or exploring opportunities to use Road Development Cost Charges to complete funding needs.
The motion was brought forward by Councilor George Anderson and supported by the majority of council. We would like to thank The Mayor, Councillor Anderson and the rest of council for their vision and support of this important initiative.
